There are currently four different generations working together in the workforce. Each has different motivators, ways of communicating, and goals. Understanding the differences is essential for leadership and co-workers to have positive and productive relationships at work.
Defining the Generations

Different Motivators
Everyone has different motivators, but examining each generational group can help determine those motivators. Baby Boomers want to continue working for intellectual stimulation. Generation X wants more recognition and is very goal-oriented. Generation Y wants to grow quickly in their fields and seeks convenience and opportunity. Generation Z wants feedback and meaningful outcomes.
Different Ways of Communicating
The different generations have different communication methods. Baby Boomers prefer to communicate via phone, so keep that in mind if you are trying to relay information to that group. If you email a Baby Boomer, you might get the answer via phone. Generation X and Y prefer email and texting, so if you have a meeting or discussion, follow up with an email if any action needs to be taken. Generation Z always has their smartphone on their side, so communicating via text or app will be the most effective.
Different Career Goals
Each generation also has different goals regarding their career journey. Baby Boomers seek job security and want to be comfortable as they begin their journey toward retirement. Generation X wants work-life balance, but they want to settle down and find a place to stay. Generation Y wants freedom and flexibility. Generation Y is at the age where they are raising families and need that flexibility to keep up with their busy family life. Generation Z is just entering the workforce and learning their preferences. They might tend to job hop more as they navigate to find their fit.
Tips to accommodate and work well with different generations:
- Respect and understand the different goals.
- Have a balance in how you communicate.
- Allow different generations to work together on projects to encourage diverse perspectives.
- Be patient and flexible. Do your best to accommodate each group.
