With many organizations adopting remote or hybrid schedules since the pandemic, employers are struggling with ways to engage and reward their employees effectively. Organizations are sharing that things they have done in the past – happy hours, team outings – are not getting the interest and participation they once did. As such, employers are struggling with ideas on how they can bring their teams together to recognize and reward in a fun way without forcing them to participate.
We saw many people’s preferences change during the pandemic, including a more excellent value and appreciation of work/life balance. Some advice to employers is to consider offering some employee engagement activities during regular work hours as well, as opposed to providing only after-work events. Some examples include lunch and learn, bringing in a massage therapist, and early happy hours towards the end of the workday.
Employers who have a large number of remote employees may want to consider planning some fun team-building events via Zoom, such as an interactive magic show, team trivia, a cooking class, or a virtual happy hour.
Another idea for employers is to create Employee Resource Groups (ERG). ERGs are typically employee-led groups that allow employees to connect with other employees who share common interests. ERGs can also provide a network for employees to build new relationships, educate one another, and understand each other at a deeper level.
Finally, organizations may want to consider conducting an employee survey to gain more insight into what types of events employees enjoy and would like to see/attend in the future.
